Just wondering what the year of my John Deere 400 is serial number C400J123028M. It has the 20 HP Kohler motor in it. JD 400 Garden tractors were made from 1975 - 1983.
Even if the hours were listed on the machine history, I wouldn't trust them. Too often the delivery receipts are done by the dealer's accounting department based on information they have available at the time of transaction. In other words, sometimes they are guesses.
On older tractors like that, telling Deere about ownership transfers was a real pain. It's easier now with direct computer links, but many dealers probably still only do the delivery receipts when it involves using Deere for floor-plan financing. Farmer to farmer, or through competitive dealers or auctions, won't get registered with Deere usually. Sometimes the service office will do it if the tractor is in for a major repair or something. In this particular case, it looks like the second dealer may have paid out the floorplan before they sold it, so the delivery receipt didn't get done when it finally got sold.
