The Proton Inspira is a four-door compactsaloon produced by Malaysian automobile manufacturer Proton, which was first launched in November 2010.
It was sold exclusively in Malaysia as a rebadgedninth-generation Mitsubishi Lancer, as the result of a collaboration between Mitsubishi Motors and Proton. The Inspira succeeded the Proton Waja, and complements the indigenously-designed Proton Prevé in the Malaysian market.[2]
The name 'Inspira' comes from the English word, Inspiration.
Proton renewed a technological transfer agreement with Mitsubishi Motors, an agreement that in the mid-1980s was fundamental to Proton’s origins. Mitsubishi would get the Exora for rebadge in Japan under them as fair technology sharing.[3]
1,100 orders were received within the first 10 days after dealers began accepting bookings for the Inspira. Price-wise, the Inspira costs significantly less than the Lancer in Malaysia because it is assembled locally, whereas the Mitsubishi is imported as a CBU from Japan. Not only are import duties much lower, but the investment Proton made to produce the model locally entitles it to financial incentives from the government that allows it to bring down prices.[4]
However, certain parties have criticised Proton for returning to the practice of rebadging cars.[5] A practice Proton had moved away from, with the release of the Proton Waja in the year 2000. Proton continued to independently develop 6 more models after that.
Proton group managing director Datuk Syed Zainal Abidin Syed Mohamed Tahir has reportedly said that it would cost Proton as much as RM700 million (USD230 million) to develop a new car from the ground up but only half the amount via its collaboration with Mitsubishi Motors. This enables the Proton Inspira to be marketed at a cheaper price.
Mitsubishi allowed Proton to rebadge the Lancer under conditions that there were no changes to any key features. The Inspira thus shares most of its components, including the powertrain which is imported in fully assembled form from Mitsubishi Motors Japan, with the Lancer. The Inspira did, however, feature tweaked suspension in order to improve the driving dynamics and handling, whilst Proton also worked to improve the build quality of the Inspira. The improvements to the car drew praise from Mitsubishi management after they inspected the Inspira in Shah Alam.[6]
On November 10, 2010, the Proton Inspira was debuted with two variants: 1.8E (Executive, manual or CVT transmission) & 2.0P (Premium, CVT only) with the choice of 4 colors: Plum Red, Solid White, Genetic Silver and Tranquility Black. Standard features included: Dual SRS airbags, leather-wrapped steering wheel, front pre-tensioner seatbelts, ABS with EBD, immobiliser and alarm system, central locking system, ISOFIX child seat anchors, rear parking sensors, solar and security tinted film, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, trunk lid remote release, front fog lights, welcome light system, driver’s side anti-trap/auto up-down power window, height adjustable driver’s seat and a MP3/Bluetooth-enabled head unit with Arkamys 3D DSP. The 2.0P added on cruise control, column-mounted shift paddles, dark brown wood trim (whereas the 1.8E uses matte silver trim), automatic climate control, automatic headlamp and rain sensors, body kits, a trunk lip spoiler, Nappa leather upholstery on both the seats and door trims, leather-wrapped gear knob and a GPS navigation system.[7]
In November 2011, a limited edition of the Proton Inspira called the Proton Inspira R3 was launched. It was based on the 1.8E variant of the standard Inspira with changes such as an addition of R3 body kits, R3 trunk lip spoiler and R3 18' alloy wheels. However, this variant was only available in manual transmission.[8]
In June 2012, the Proton Inspira 2.0 Executive was launched, replacing the 1.8E CVT and was available with a choice of 4 colors: Elegant Brown, Tranquility Black, Genetic Silver and Solid White. It features 16' alloy wheels with a new design. Compared to the 2.0 Premium variant, the 2.0 Executive variant features fabric upholstery on both the seats and door trims, and matte silver trim as opposed to 2.0P's dark brown wood trim. This variant also lacked automatic speed adjustment for windshield wipers—and body kits, along with the rear spoiler—were omitted.[9]
In July 2012, the Proton Inspira 2.0 Premium was updated with 17' alloy wheels, as well as a different head unit which features touch screen interface. With the launch of the updated 2.0P variant, the Inspira was available with one new color: Indiana Grey (2.0P only).[10]
In January 2014, the Proton Inspira Super Premium was launched with only one color available: Solid White. Moving on from the 2.0P, it adds on 18' R3 alloy wheels, R3 sport springs, R3 “Blood Stripe Stickers' and R3 body kits consisting of a front splitter, side skirts, a rear apron and a boot spoiler. The R3 add-ons were rather similar to those offered in the limited edition Proton Inspira R3. Like the 2.0P, it was only available in one transmission option: CVT. [11]
In February 2015, the Proton Inspira was recalled, regarding concerns about the drive belt pulley (V-ribbed belt).[12]
In April 2015, the production of the Proton Inspira was officially halted.[13]

The Proton Waja is a saloon car manufactured by Malaysian automotive company, Proton, first released in August 2000.
The name Waja, which means (strong as) steel in Malay has both physical and abstract connotations. In the United Kingdom, it was sold as the Proton Impian, in which Impian was another derivative of the Malay language, meaning dream.
The Proton Waja is the first model designed in house by Proton. However, the Waja's chassis was based on the Mitsubishi Carisma. The development of the Waja began at the end of the 1999, together with the Campro engine, however, the development of the Campro engine was still in progress at the time of its launch, and therefore Proton had to outsource various engines for the Waja between 2000 and 2006 such as the 4G18 engine for the Waja from Mitsubishi.
More than 292,556 Proton Wajas have been sold between 2000 and 2012, and of which, the variants powered by the 1.6 litre Mitsubishi 4G18 engine made up for the bulk of total sales, followed by the 1.6 litre Proton CamPro S4PH / CPS and lastly, the 1.8 litre Renault F4P.[N 1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8]
It was launched in August 2000, together with the introduction of Proton's new corporate logo. Early batches of the Waja had no airbags, ABS, and came with fabric seats only.[10]
On Saturday, 6 October 2001, the Proton Waja 1.6X was launched. It was only available with an automatic transmission and was equipped with more luxurious items like a semi automatic Proton Air air conditioning system, ABS with Brake Assist (BA) and Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), auto flip mirror, a semi wood steering wheel, wood grain interior, full leather seats and door trim. The audio system was upgraded to a Clarion PX1676AA, with a built in CD player and six disc CD changer.
Proton made minor changes to the seats by adding rear armrest with cup holder (which the standard Waja lacked), rear seats adjustable head rest and lumbar support for driver seats. Safety features were also added such as a driver's airbag and ABS.[11][12]
In 2002, Proton launched the Proton Waja 1.8X. It was powered by the Renault F4P engine, which was also found in the Renault Laguna. Its equipment was mostly shared with the Proton Waja 1.6X. However changes included a passenger airbag and larger front discs brakes.[13]
At the end of 2005, Proton additionally introduced another variant of the Waja, known as Proton Chancellor. It was used by representatives of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) during the meeting of ASEAN leaders in the KLCC, shortly before its launch in 2006.[14] The Chancellor had a longer wheelbase and a 2.0 litre Mitsubishi 6A12V6 engine, similar to that used in Proton Perdana V6. The car was only available with a four speed automatic transmission.[15]
In January 2006, the Proton Waja was updated. The major change was the Campro S4PH engine. Other changes included leather seats, a beige and brown interior color, a new meter cluster, redesigned air-condition vents and a new double-DIN CD player with MP3 support. Models with Campro engine were more expensive though sold alongside the Mitsubishi 4G18 equipped Waja initially.[16][17]
In June 2006, the Proton Waja exterior was updated with a new honeycomb lower grille, new headlamps, new rear taillights nicknamed thermometer taillights, the Waja lettering moving to above the number plate and new alloy wheels.[18]
Proton's motorsports division, Race Rally Research (R3) launched the commemorative special ion duo of the Proton Waja MME Edition and Proton GEN.2 MME Edition in August 2006. They were built to celebrate Protons R3 Amprex team emerging victorious as Overall champions and Class O champions completing 279 laps in a specially-built Lotus Exige 300RR. Only 200 units of each car available, and each car will have a serial number and name plate due to its limited ion run. MME stood for Merdeka Millenium Endurance ion.[19][20]
Details changes includes:
In 2007, the Proton Waja was facelifted with new headlamp, new fog lamp, new hood and garnish, new bumper, new grill and new front turn signal lamp. Two variants were available: 1.6M/T and 1.6A/T with five color options: Twilight Blue, Iridescent White, Burgundy, Metal Grey and Brilliant Red.[21][22]
In 2008, the Waja received the 125 PS (92 kW) CamPro CPS engine. The exterior was given minor changes, such as a new grille and new tail lights. The 2008 Waja CPS also includes both ABS and airbag as standard for the Malaysian market, which were previously optional equipment.[23]
The British Touring Car Championship (BTCC) is a touring car racing series held each year in the United Kingdom. Proton formerly participated in the BTCC between 2002 and 2004 under the official team name, Petronas Syntium Proton (Team PSP). The team in the 2002 and 2003 BTCC seasons was headed by Scottish and English drivers David Leslie and Phil Bennett respectively in two heavily modified BTC-T Proton Impiantouring cars.[24]
Both drivers were succeeded by South AfricanShaun Watson-Smith and MalaysianFariqe Hairuman in the 2004 season.[25] Team PSP proved largely unsuccessful in the BTCC, with just two wins out of a grand total of 95 races, and finally withdrew altogether after the conclusion of the season of 2004.
The Proton Waja was sold in the United Kingdom where it was rebadged as the Impian, did not begin until April 2001, and it has continued virtually unchanged until sales ceased in 2008.[26][27] The Impian was only available with RHD, while LHD models were available elsewhere in Europe.[citation needed]
The Proton Impian was offered with two variants mostly throughout its time in the United Kingdom: GLS and GLX. Both offering manual and automatic transmissions and the GLX being the more premium variant of the two.[28][29]
Sales were not strong, as it was behind the best of the competition at its launch and virtually all of its competitors were all replaced since. Its decent ride and handling, generous equipment levels, competitive asking price and comprehensive aftersales package were perhaps the only things that kept it going with British buyers.[30][31]
The Proton Waja was launched in Indonesia in July 2007 at the 15th Indonesia International Motor Show by PT Proton Edar Indonesia.[32] Only available with one variant with either manual or automatic transmissions with the Campro S4PH engine.[33][34]
5,000+ Proton Waja were exported to Iran to be used as taxis.[35][36]
The Proton Waja was exported to Pakistan as the Proton Impian where it launched in September 2006 and was available in one variant with either a manual or an automatic transmission.[37]
The Proton Waja / Impian was the first and thus far only Proton car to be officially crash tested by the Euro NCAP in 2002.[38] It scored a three star rating for adult occupant safety, but only one star for pedestrian safety. The tested configuration included four SRS airbags (dual front and dual side), a configuration which was limited to a handful of developed markets such as the United Kingdom and Australia.[39][40]Malaysian market Proton Wajas never received side airbags.[41]
Proton claimed the Impian was the first of a new generation of cars that were designed to Euro NCAP standards, but after the Impian's disappointing performance, Proton promised to improve on future designs. Ten years later, that promise was fulfilled when the Proton Prevé was awarded the full five stars by Australia's ANCAP, an organization whose methods closely align with that of the Euro NCAP.[42]
Top Gear aired a segment which featured a damaged Proton Waja alongside a damaged Toyota Avensis, to showcase the difference between a three star and a five star Euro NCAP car after a head-on collision with a deformable steel concrete wall.[43]
Early models had their centre air con vents fail blow cold air to the front passenger due to a design flaw. Redesigned air con vents in latter models resolved this problem. Fuel pump problem, power windows problem and exterior door handles were all also problems in early models. Latter models with the redesigned 'thermometer' styled taillights were prone to water leaking into the housing and then the boot due to a design flaw which resulted into the brake light melting the plastic housing. Two recalls happened for the Waja. Early one a recall had taken place for Waja's with manual transmission where the bolts used for the manual transmission was incorrectly tighten and in 2005, roughly 3000 Waja's recalled because of defective wheels.
